Squeegee Blades for Floor Scrubbers – 3 Essentials | RapidClean Illawarra
Squeegee Blades for Floor Scrubbers: 3 Essential Things to Know
If you run an auto-scrubber in your site, the squeegee is just as important as the brush. A worn or damaged blade will leave streaks and puddles behind – which looks untidy, creates odours and can increase the risk of slips and falls for staff and visitors.
At RapidClean Illawarra we work with cleaners, facility managers and contractors across Wollongong, the Illawarra and South Coast. Below is a simple guide to help you get the best from your squeegee blades and know when it’s time to replace them.

1. What the squeegee actually does
The brush or pad on your scrubber loosens the dirt – but it’s the squeegee that makes the floor safe to walk on again.
- The squeegee assembly usually has a metal frame with two flexible blades.
- As the machine moves forward, the blades sit against the floor and form a seal.
- The vacuum motor pulls air through this “channel”, lifting the dirty water into the recovery tank instead of leaving it on the floor.
Because the squeegee must follow the floor closely, the blades need to be soft enough to flex over small bumps and joints, but firm enough not to fold over or let water escape.
2. Choosing the right blade material
Not all squeegee blades are the same. The material matters, especially if you are dealing with chemicals, oils or rough surfaces. The three main types you’ll see are:
Natural rubber blades
- Good wiping performance on smooth floors with only light irregularities.
- Best suited to standard detergents and everyday soil.
- Not ideal where there are strong chemicals, oils or hydrocarbons – those can attack the rubber and shorten its life.
Polyurethane blades
- Made from a tough synthetic material that handles aggressive detergents, oil and grease much better.
- Often the preferred choice in workshops, car parks, food processing areas and industrial sites.
- Generally more resistant to abrasion, so they can last longer in harsh conditions.
Latex blades
- Very flexible and robust, with excellent tear resistance.
- Good where floors are uneven or where the squeegee has to follow a lot of contours.
- Because latex is still a rubber-based material, it doesn’t handle strong chemicals and solvents as well as polyurethane.
If you’re not sure what’s currently on your machine, or which option suits your site, our team at RapidClean Illawarra can help you match the right blades to your scrubber and floor type.

3. How to look after your squeegee blades
Even the best blades will stop performing if they’re not set up and maintained properly. Here are some simple habits that make a big difference:
- Check the contact with the floor. The blade should touch the floor evenly along its full width. If the ends lift or it’s heavily bent in the middle, you’ll leave water behind.
- Use all four edges. Most blades are “four-sided”. When the working edge is worn or rounded off, rotate the blade so a fresh edge is in contact with the floor. Repeat until all four edges have been used, then replace.
- Inspect at the start of each shift. Look for cuts, nicks, flat spots or hardened rubber. It’s quicker to swap or rotate a blade before you start than to re-clean streaky floors later.
- Keep a spare set on hand. Having replacement blades in your store room means you don’t have to keep running a machine that’s not picking up properly.
- Don’t be tempted by the cheapest blades. Low-quality blades often wear out faster, don’t seal as well, and can leave more water and debris on the floor. In the long run that can cost more in labour, rework and safety incidents.
Clean, dry floors mean safer sites
Workplace safety rules in NSW put a strong emphasis on preventing slips and trips. A scrubber that leaves patches of water or chemical behind isn’t just annoying – it can contribute to accidents, claims and downtime.
By choosing the right squeegee material, keeping it correctly adjusted and replacing blades before they are badly worn, you help ensure:
- Cleaner, drier floors after each scrub
- Less risk of slip hazards
- Better presentation for staff, visitors and customers
- Longer life for your scrubber and vac motors
